  1. 1 cup basmati rice
  2. 1/2 sliced onion
  3. 1 tsp salt
  4. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 green or black whole cardamom (optional)
  6. 1 bay leaf (optional)
  7. 2 cups water

Directions:

  1. Wash rice and soak in 2 cups water for 15-20 minutes.

  2. Sauté cumin seeds, green or black cardamom and bay leaf .

  3. Stir it for a few seconds and add sliced onion. Keep stirring till it starts getting golden brown .

  4. Then add soaked rice with same water

  5. Bring to a boil then turn heat to medium and cover rice

  6. Let rice cook, covered, until all the water is gone.

  7. Check and see a grain of rice if it’s tender enough. If it is, turn stove off and let sit an additional few minutes. If not, add a little more water and continue to cook until that water is fully absorbed.
