1. 6 oz Urad dal (7/8 cup) (available in Indian stores)
  2. 2 ounces (1/8 cup) red kidney beans (uncooked)
  3. 1 tsp salt
  4. 1 tsp tumeric
  5. 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  6. 1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 2 tsp fresh ground coriander seeds
  8. 2 tsp oil
  9. 1/2 onion cut into small cubes
  10. 1 inch grated ginger
  11. 4 cloves crushed garlic
  12. 3 Tbs crushed tomatoes or tomato paste
  13. Fresh chopped cilantro to garnish


  1. Wash and soak urad dal and red kidney beans in 5 cups water overnight in crock pot
  2. In the morning plug in the crock pot and add onion, ginger, garlic, salt, and turmeric powder.
  3. Cook for 8 hours
  4. Sauté cumin seeds until brown
  5. Add add crushed tomatoes and crushed coriander seeds to cumin seeds and sauté entire mixture briefly
  6. Add mixture to crock pot
  7. When ready to serve, garnish with freshly chopped cilantro
